RFID
The Technology
RFID tags store information or an identifier according to an item to which they are
attached; special tag-readers obtain this information over a wireless channel when
within range. Readers then communicate to a centralised server, which manages the
information in real-time: providing traceable, up-to-date and very accurate
information. Several frequencies can be used for the wireless communication
between readers and tags; each having different properties of range, material
penetration and data speed appropriate to the particular environment.
Of course RFID technologies are not appropriate in all circumstances and have
limitations in particular environments. The key to unlocking the potential of this
powerful technology is to understand your business, understand your processes and
from this, understand how RFID could provide a new paradigm in information
monitoring and control.
